  • Govind Agrawal, professor of optics and physics at the University of Rochester, will receive the 2012 Quantum Electronics Award presented by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Photonics Society.
    This award is given annually to recognize an individual or group of individuals for outstanding technical contributions to quantum electronics, either in fundamentals or applications, or both. Recipients are bestowed with a $4,000 honorarium, certificate and a bronze medal.
    Agrawal is receiving the award for his “sustained contributions to fiber-optic telecommunication technology through innovative research and authorship of numerous widely-respected books in the field.”
    Agrawal's research interests focus on quantum electronics, nonlinear optics and laser physics. He has written seven books and published over 300 research papers in a variety of journals.
    The award will be presented at the 2012 IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC), in Burlingame, Calif. on Sept. 24.
