The Hilton athletic department hosted its annual sports awards ceremony on Thursday, May 31, recognizing the accomplishments of the fall, winter and spring student-athletes. Along with individual awards and scholarships, Hilton recognized its division, sectional and state champions.
Some of the first awards handed out on the evening recognized the scholastic achievements of each team. In all, 23 teams earned the New York State Scholar Athlete Team award, 11 in the fall (gymnastics, boys soccer, boys cross country, girls soccer, girls swimming and driving, girls tennis, field hockey, girls cross country, cheer, girls volleyball, football), seven in the winter (girls basketball, wrestling, ice hockey, girls indoor track, boys swimming and diving, boys indoor track, cheer) and five in the spring (boys tennis, girls lacrosse, girls track, boys track, softball).
Other award winners included: Outstanding Senior Athlete – Pat Meyer (male), Heather Hebert (female); Outstanding Underclassman Athlete – Vincent DePrez (male), Jordon Ott (female); Hilton Coaches' Award – Conor Firkens (male), Deanna Palma (female); George Collamer Award for Sportsmanship – DJ Logory (male), Shannen Drennon (female); David Johns Award for Boys Sports – Ben Schreiber; Ann Jennejahn Award for Girls Sports – Heather Hebert; Mary Lou Trimmer Award for Outstanding Senior Cheerleader – Kayla Ryan; Deina Miller Award for Outstanding Contribution to Cheerleading – Lindsey Kernan and Tieyler Trybus; U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award – Andrew Agent (male), Morgan Burns (female); Gary Schwonke Award – Physical Education teacher and coach Kevin Whelehan; Be A Cadet Fan Award – Hilton Sports Boosters.
Scholarship winners included: Hilton Parma Soccer Club Scholarship – Leia Hayward, Heather Hebert, Tyler Coleman; Hilton Hockey Booster Robby Coppaway Scholarship – Andrew Agent; Hilton Hockey Booster Senior Spectator Scholarship – Ashleigh Bechtold; Lady Cadet Girls Basketball Scholarship – Alex Gardner, Heather Hebert, Rachel Carpenter; Sports Boosters Scholarship – Morgan Burns, Heather Hebert, Katrina Campbell.
Another noted group recognized on the evening were the seven student-athletes who had played a varsity sport all 12 of the seasons they were in high school. Dan Bowers, Katrina Campbell, Tyler Coleman, Justin Contestabile, Monica Griffiths, Pat Meyer and Nigel Walker were all honored for their hard work and dedication over their four years at Hilton High.
The Cadets lifted 10 new championship banners to their rafters this past season (nine division, one team sectional), brought home 12 individual sectional titles and had two members on a state championship team.
Nigel Walker and Ross Pirnie teamed up for a New York State Championship in the Intersectional Relay, while both helped the boys track and field team to its first Section 5 title in school history. Morgan Burns (girls swimming – 100 breaststroke); Vincent DePrez (wrestling – second place finish at states); Johnny Diakamoholis (wrestling); Jenny Coleman, Haley Keene, Victoria Grisdale, Shannon Page (indoor track – 3200 relay); Zoe Camillaci (indoor track and outdoor track – pole vault), Tyler Ranke (outdoor track – 3000m steeplechase, 3200m run); Pat Meyer (outdoor track – 110m hurdles, triple jump); Kyle Podgers (outdoor track – shot put, discus).
