Section 5 was represented in grand fashion at the 2012 New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held June 8-9 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. A pair of local athletes, Greece Olympia’s Desmond Mobley and Hilton’s Pat Meyer, brought home state championships in Division I competition, with many other local athletes brining home fine performances.

Mobley became a Federation state champion after jumping a meet and Section 5 record 25’2”. He won the Division I title with a jump of 24’1.5”, a half inch better than the second place finisher. Mobley also finished in a tie for second place in the Federation high jump championships, clearing a height of 6’6”.

Meyer brought home a Federation state title in the pentathlon, finishing with a final score of 3,629 points. In individual event results, he finished second in the 110m hurdles, tied for first in the high jump, fifth in the shot put, third in the long jump and fifth in the 1500m run.

Other local representatives included: Camaria Long (Aquinas, senior) second place girls 100m dash Division II, sixth place girls 100m dash Division II; Madeline Kopp (Spencerport, junior) seventh place girls 400m dash Division I; Amanda Entress (Gates Chili, senior) 14th place girls long jump Division I; Erica Williams (Batavia, senior) second place girls shot put Division II; Zoe Camillacia (Hilton, freshman) 13th place girls pole vault Federation championship; Brian Smith (Greece Athena, junior) third place boys 100m dash Division I, sixth place boys 100m dash Federation championship, third place boys 200m dash Division I; Nigel Walker (Hilton, senior) 13th place boys 400m hurdles Division ; Desmond Chambers (Gates Chili, senior) 12th place boys long jump Division I; Kyle Podgers (Hilton, senior) 10th place boys discus throw Division I; Jahmahl Pardner (Aquinas, senoir) 3rd place boys 200m dash Division II, fourth place boys 110m hurdles Division II, second place boys 110m hurdles Federation championship; Eric Williams (Batavia, senior) second place boys 110m hurdles Division II, fifth place boys 110m hurdles Federation championship; Francisco Martinez, Eric Williams, Mitch Noble and Brandon Stevenson (Batavia) 13th place boys 4x100 relay team.

Mobley’s performance capped the best individual season in Olympia's history. The season was not only a dream for Mobley, but Olympia track as a whole. For years the Olympia coaching staff has been telling anyone who will listen that the program deserves elite Section 5 status. This spring Olympia achieved just that, winning the school’s first Monroe County and Section 5 championships in the same season. Including the indoor track season, Olympia has finished as Champion or runner-up six times with two sectional championships to the program's credit since the winter of 2010.

This spring Olympia was led by a dominating junior class which was supprted by standout performances by senior Jermaine Junious (110 hurdles) and freshman CJ Noble (400m Sectional Champion), both who qualified for the NYS track meet. Olympia juniors Mobley and Craig Hardgers combined to sweep the jumping events at sectionals. Juniors Ja'marie Jefferson and Raphael Tshbangu provided depth and speed, helping Olympia to dominate on the track this spring. Olympia is alos developing a distance component that will be feared next year.

Olympia coaches are excited for the 2012-2013 school year as the team has a great deal of young talent just waiting to make their mark on Section 5. The future is bright for Olympia Track!
