American Legion season in full swing

The Monroe County American Legion league schedule began last week, with a host of games from around the area featuring athletes from many local schools.

Greece Post
The Greece Post legion team finished 4-2 last week and now possess a 7-3 record on the overall season.
Jake Zimmer tossed a complete came six-hitter to improve to 2-0 on the season in a 6-2 win over Brooks Shepard. Ben Knauf went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI to lead the offense. Ryan Prevost had a triple and three RBI, Tom Freer was 2-for-3 with one run and Tyler Smola went 2-for-4.
In a 4-1 win over Ely Fagan, Taylor Byrne, David Pavone and Freer combined on a four-hitter. Frankie Carnevale was 2-for-3 with a double and a run, Knauf was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Dan Curtis added an RBI single.
The team finished up the week at the Amherst Invitational, making it all the way to the finals before falling to Lamm Post for the second time of the weekend.
Greece put 20 runs on the board in its opening game of the tourney, as Mike DiStefano went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Brett Sander was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Jamie Magone was 2-for-4 with two double and two RBI.
Prevost went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI to lead the team in their first loss of the tournament to Lamm Post. DiStefano was 2-for-3 while Smola added an RBI single.
The team bounced back against Jurek Post in the semifinals. Mike Bessette picked up the win on the mound to improve to 2-0. Carnevale finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a three-run home run. Byrne was 3-for-3 with two doubles, DiStefano was 2-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and one stolen base, and Max DeNora was 3-for-3 with four RBI.
Playing against Lamm Post in the tournament finals, Greece dropped its final game of the week, 4-3.
David Pavone tossed a complete game five-hitter to come away as the tough luck losing pitcher. Pavone battled through the game and kept his team close despite being hit in the face with a broken bat in the fourth inning. Smola, Byrne and Carnevale each had an RBI in the sixth to make the scored 4-3, but Greece could not push across the tying run. Mike Magnanti was 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Smola finished 2-for-3.

Cottreal Warner Post
The Cottreal Warner baseball team completed a 3-1 week to open up their 2012 season.
The team fell to Robert Shaw 8-4 in its first game of the season. Spenser Thomas had three hits, one run scored, one RBI and one stolen base, Michael D’Eletto scored two runs and Trevor Thomas had two hits. Taylor Michaud tossed five innings of shutout ball, striking out four.
Cottreal Warner rebounded in the night cap to defeat Robert Shaw 6-3 for its first win of the season. Danny Herring finished 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the offense. Cody Herman struck out four over four shutout innings, while D’Eletto came on to strike out the final two batters of the game to earn the save.
The team picked up its second win with a 10-0 shutout against Ely Fagan. Tommy Mastrodonato went 4-for-4 with two RBI to pace the offense. D’Eletto and Kyle McKeay each added a pair of RBI, while McKay earned the win on the mound with five innings of work. Brendan Jones and Taylor Michaud finished out the final two innings as Cottreal Warner limited Ely Fagan to just one hit.
Cottreal Warner ran its winning streak to three games with a 3-0 victory over Hiscock Fishbaugh. Mastordonto struck out four over six innings to earn the win, while Steven Di’Nicola pitched a perfect seventh to seal the win. Evan Harasta went 2-for-2 to lead the offense while Spenser Thomas had two RBI.
