Hilton senior Shane Endres has signed a letter of intent to play men's college lacrosse at Mercyhurst College beginning in the fall of 2012.
Endres will join the Division II Lakers after playing three years of varsity lacrosse for the Cadets. A lacrosse player since the third grade Endres earned all-county honorable mention honors as a sophomore, then brought home first-team all-county honors during his junior and senior seasons.
This past season he helped Hilton to a 12-6 overall record and an appearance in the Class A semifinals. He anchored a defensive unit that held its opponents to five goals or less on seven occasions (all Cadet wins) and yielded just 7.33 goals against. Endres notched a season-best two points with a goal and an assist in a 10-5 win over Eastridge on May 10, 2012, and finished the season with two goals and two assists.
As he wraps up his final weeks at Hilton, Endres already has an eye on earning his time on the field at Mercyhurst. Having received a summer workout plan from his college coaches, he understands the commitment to playing at the next level has already begun.
“The speed of the game and the level of commitment it takes to play,” said Endres, when asked what he thinks will be the biggest differences between high school and college lacrosse. “To be successful in college you have to put a lot of extra time into practice and training if you want to stay competitive and earn playing time because there are so many good athletes.”
Endres will join a host of other Section V alumni at Mercyhurst for Division II competition in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Since the program's first season with varsity status in 1997 the team has compiled an overall record of 153-51, including a record of 123-31 under 11-year head coach Chris Ryan, made five NCAA tournament appearances and turned out 14 first-team All-American selections.
