The Greece Odyssey girls soccer team opened its season this past weekend with a pair of games at the Hilton Tournament, winning both contests to be crowned tournament champions.
In the team’s first game on Friday night, the Leopards came away with a 2-0 victory over cross-town rival Greece Arcadia. Liz Dohr and Jessica Marlowe each netted a goal, while Kelsey Lafferty provided one assist. Morgan O’Leary recorded five saves in goal for her first career shutout at the varsity level.
The team found themselves pitted against the host team in the championship game on Saturday, coming away with a hard-fought 1-0 win. Ashley Salsedo nothced the lone goal of the match off an assist from Marlowe, while O’Leary made six saves for her second consecutive shutout in goal.
“I thought our defense was tremendous through both games,” said Odyssey head coach Nino Pilato. “Both the teams we faced play great soccer and are well coached. Our defense, including Kelsey Lafferty, Rachel Walsh, Katie Wilbur, Caitlyn Owens and Taylor Ott, limited Arcadia and Hilton to minimal scoring opportunities.”
Last year’s Section 5 Class B champions and New York State Class B runner-up, the 2012 team returns a number of key players from 2011. Emily Tucker, Jessica Marlowe, Liz Dohr, Kelsey Lafferty, Katie Wilbur, Rachel Walsh and Morgan O’Leary are back to lead a mix of returning and new players through another exciting year as the program seeks its seventh sectional title in the past 10 years.
