Chelsea Shoemaker
Rochester Institute of Technology
Class of 2013
Sport: Soccer
Height: 5’2”
Position: Midfield
Bio: Daughter of Ellen and Jim, Chelsea played two seasons of high school soccer at Greece Athena before transferring to Aquinas for her final two years. Also a varsity participant in softball and track and field, she was twice named all-county second team (2006 Monroe County, 2008 Private Parochial), while serving as team captain her senior season.
Shoemaker started 15 games for RIT as a freshman, finishing first on the team in assists (5) and second in shots (26).
She continued her outstanding play as a sophomore, as she finished the season second on the team with nine points. A starter in all 18 games, Shoemaker recorded her first two collegiate goals on October 26, 2010, in a 2-1 victory over Fredonia State.
After missing the 2011 season due to injury Shoemaker will return in 2012 as an integral part of RIT’s midfield. Along with her commitment on the field she also serves as the current RIT Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President, and for the 2012-2013 season will serve as the Liberty League SAAC President.
At RIT, Shoemaker is deeply involved in community service, spearheading RIT’s volunteer work with the Special Olympics, as 90 student-athletes traveled to volunteer at Bristol Mountain on Feb. 11. In addition, she helped with National Girls and Women in Sports day and has participated in RIT's Giant Read.
One of Shoemaker’s main initiatives for the 2012-13 season is a Student-Athlete Summit, a leadership program that will bring students from each Liberty League institution together for a weekend of workshops. She originally proposed this idea to the Liberty League Athletic Directors who voted to pass the proposal.
"Chelsea Shoemaker is an outstanding choice to lead the Liberty League's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee," said Liberty League commissioner Tracy King. "Chelsea has demonstrated great leadership ability in her role as SAAC President at RIT. She will bring new energy and ideas to the league and I am excited to work with her in the upcoming year."
"I am extremely grateful for the guidance I have received from both Mr. Spiotti and Coach Masterson," said Shoemaker. "Working with our RIT SAAC Executive Board members... as well as the whole RIT community has equipped me with the skills to lead at the Liberty League level."
