An article stated that Rep. Tom Reed “focuses on his record of constituent service” in his election campaign. Earlier Reed is quoted saying he is “champion for the private sector.” I would strongly disagree.

In mid-May 2011, I contacted Tom Reed’s office to discuss H.R. 1351, a bill seeking to correct a major fiscal problem created by Congress that affects my 16 employees and over 500 active business customers. Five weeks later I received the typical brush-off letter, the bill was in committee, but Tom Reed would “welcome the opportunity to communicate with” me and I should like him on Facebook.

I contacted Reed’s office, asking if that was all the constituent service a small businessman should expect from him? I talked to the Washington and Corning offices and left detailed voice mails at least four more times over a period of 15 months. Finally, in August 2012, I was promised a call from the senior staffer the next Monday or Tuesday. He did not call.

I called the Washington office, irate that they had stonewalled my simple request to talk for 15 months. When I told them that I would tell every single businessman I know that Reed does not care about small businesses in his district, they put me on hold. Miraculously, the senior staffer came on the phone to appease me. After 15 months, they could talk, because I threatened to tell everyone about their callous disregard for small business.

There is a cure for this. Please go out on Nov. 6 and vote for Nate Shinagawa. We need a real representative for the 23rd district.
