Recently, we were shocked by the tragic death of Fairport High School teacher Heather Boyum. It is impossible to know the impact of this tragedy on her family and friends. Our hearts and tears and support are with them.

Heather epitomized teaching. She was bright, focused, and most importantly, she was connected to students. The hard work of learning biology or completing an Advanced Placement lab was all very “doable” because Mrs. Boyum would challenge and coach every student to success. Heather Boyum was connected to her students, her peers, her school, and her community. Her energy and passion were contagious.

These very same traits of high energy, connections, and belief in the beauty of others are what marked the lives of Fairport students Sara Monnat, Bailey Goodman, Meredith McClure, Katie Shirley, and Hannah Congdon. And, we cannot help but remember the tragic accident in 1986 that took the lives of Kent Bouley, James and David Clifford, Pam Howk, and Robert Burns, Jr.

The Angel Walk this month was a powerful reminder of our caring in times of tragedy and a powerful reminder of the strength of our students, community, and schools.

Yes, we will feel the hurt when school starts and for a long time to come. Yet, from this hurt, our passion to care for and to help every child to succeed is intensified. That is the power of our Fairport Family.
