Mackenzie Moranz set the bar high early in her soccer career. By the eighth grade, the goalkeeper was thinking about playing in college.
Moranz set the plan in motion, joining the Pittsford Sutherland varsity team. Thanks to a lot of hard work, Moranz followed through on her goals.
The Sutherland senior signed her national letter on intent on Thursday to play for Syracuse University beginning next year. She chose the Orange over Penn State, James Madison and a few area schools.
Moranz had 136 saves and stopped over 88 percent of her shots last season.
Why did you sign with Syracuse?
“Between all the schools all schools I looked at, between athletics and academics it seemed like the perfect fit for me. I loved the coaching staff and between them moving to the ACC and being able to train under (head coach Phil Wheddon) every single day really excited me.”
What are your thoughts on getting to play in the ACC?
“It’s crazy. It is going to be an awesome experience against some of the best competition. To go against some of the best athletes in the country, I couldn’t ask for any better.
What are some of your favorite memories about playing at Sutherland?
“Beating Pittsford Mendon in penalty kicks in sectionals earlier this season definitely sticks out. My sophomore year we beat Odyssey to snap their undefeated season, so that was a great moment. Just every time stepping out on the field here was an honor, so I will miss it.”
How was the college search process for you?
“I was in the eighth grade when I started to think about playing in college. It was something that I always aspired to do. It was a bit of a bumpy road. I got to the place I wanted, so it all worked out in the end.”
What was it like being an eighth grader on varsity?
“It was great. Everyone welcomed me with open arms. It was great competition. I loved playing against people who push me. It made me a better player every day.”
