An Owego-based scrap shredding company was named the "Recycling Today" list of North America's largest processors in 2011 and is continuing to grow.
Upstate Shredding is installing a second shredder at its Rochester yard, which the company bought from Genesee Scrap last year, and has been named for the first time in the "Recycling Today" list of the continent's largest ferrous scrap processors.
According to its March issue, "Recycling Today" selected Upstate Shredding and Liberty Iron & Metal, of Phoenix, for the first time. Both companies processed more than 1.5 million tons of scrap in 2011 and operate a combined six auto shredders.
According to "Recycling Today," all the companies on the list handled more than 55 million gross tons of material in 2011. That's an approximately 5 percent increase compared to the production of the largest North American scrap processors on the publication's 2009 list.
"Recycling Today" ranks how much ferrous scrap metal is handled physically at the companies' facilities.
