Why she’s in the news
Marlene Dattilo has been presented with the Mary Cariola Children’s Center’s first Board Angel Award for her creativity and commitment to raising funds for the center.
For instance, as a member of the center’s board only since last September, she helped pull together a Barnes and Noble collaboration and book drive “that ended up growing into a very positive public relations event for us,” Dattilo said.
Background
She has worked in the financial services field for 24 years, after earning her bachelor’s degree at St. John Fisher College.
“Like every great success story, I fell into it,” Dattilo said. “I answered an ad for a sales position in the industry ... and just had the tenacity to stay in the business.”
She now manages a team of four people for Financial Architects, which is the local general agency for and a division of MassMutual. She previously worked at First National Bank of Rochester for 12 years.
What she likes most, and least, about her work
“I really enjoy working with entrepreneurs and business owners, especially family businesses,” Dattilo said. “They tend to work as hard as I do and have the same visions and dreams ... I don’t like getting caught up in some of the administrative stuff. I’d rather be in front of the clients, doing planning work.”
About her Mary Cariola involvement
“My husband volunteered on one of their golf fundraisers a couple of years ago, and since then we’ve been involved on several committees. I am particularly impressed with Executive Director Paul Scott’s intimate knowledge of each child and their needs ... There’s a real sense that these are all ‘our’ kids.”
Hobbies and interests
Dattilo is a previous co-chairwoman of a Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester event, and still involved with that organization as well. She is also a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals, an associate member of the Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association, and a member of the Medical Group Management Association.
She loves to read, especially on her Nook; to exercise and to travel with her family.
“What I really love is to raise money for and market organizations ... When I do embrace something, I tend to go all the way!” Dattilo said.
In her own words
“I always ask myself, ‘Where are the best uses of my time and talents?’ When you do that, you can sometimes get rid of a lot of stuff that clutters.
"I’m an early riser and try to be very efficient with my time, and every day is scheduled and planned — even my gym and reading time!”
