The fourth annual ROC City Rib Fest will be kicking off the unofficial start of summer this Memorial Day weekend at Ontario Beach Park, at the northernmost end of Lake Avenue, in the Charlotte neighborhood of Rochester.

This year’s barbecue and rib festival will feature 117 competitors and teams from 14 states, though festival organizers estimate that almost 75 percent of the teams are from Monroe County and the surrounding area.

The Roc City Rib Fest has grown into one of the largest barbecue competitions in the country. Featuring both the Kansas City Barbecue Society and New England Barbecue Society grilling and barbecue events, the Roc City Rib Fest is offering over $20,000 in prize money to winners in five categories.

Proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales at the festival will be distributed amongst four local agencies and charities: Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong, the YMCA’s Invest in Youth Campaign, Ronald McDonald House of Rochester, and the Charlotte Community Association.

Over the past three years, $26,000 has been donated to local charities and agencies in Monroe County as a result of the festival.

Admission to the Roc City Rib Fest is $5; free to children ages 12 and under. The event opens at 5 p.m. tonight, Friday, May 27, and runs to 11 p.m. It continues from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29; and wraps up from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, May 30. Parking is free.
