An elderly woman died shortly after being struck by a garbage truck today in Penfield.
Monroe County Sheriff's deputies responded to 32 Shadow Pines Drive, where the woman was getting her mail. She was struck by a Suburban Disposal garbage truck as it was backing up.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead a the scene.
Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. John Helfer said the accident is under investigation. He said at this time, it is unknown whether the woman was unable to see or hear the vehicle approaching.
