Webster native Gregory Ahlquist, a social studies teacher at Webster Thomas High School, has been named 2013 New York State Teacher of the Year.
A ceremony was scheduled for this afternoon, Wednesday, Oct. 10, in Albany, during which New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch was expected to present Ahlquist with the 43rd New York State Teacher of the Year award.
Ahlquist was accompanied to Albany by Webster Superintendent Adele Bovard and Webster Thomas Principal Glenn Widor.
Ahlquist's honor will be shared with students, his family and the school and greater Webster community at a press conference/school assembly to be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Webster Thomas High School auditorium, 800 Five Mile Line Road,
Ahlquist, a 1991 Webster Thomas High School graduate, has been teaching social studies in the Webster School District for 12 years.
He has taught a variety of courses including Advanced Placement (AP) world history, AP European history, and a Holocaust elective.
Ahlquist currently serves as lead teacher for the entire AP program at Webster Thomas. I
n 2004, the Webster Teachers Association, the teachers' union, and Webster Central PTSA presented Ahlquist with its Oak Tree Award for exemplary teaching at the secondary level.
“The Webster School District family couldn’t be prouder of Greg Ahlquist and his achievements as an exceptional educator,” said Adele Bovard, Wesbster Superintendent of Schools. “Quality teaching has a positive, lifelong effect on our students. Greg is a wonderful ambassador for Webster teachers, and we are confident he will be an excellent representative to over 200,000 New York State teachers in his service as Teacher of the Year.”
Ahlquist received his bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in Medieval studies from SUNY Geneseo in 1995. He has served as an adjunct lecturer at SUNY Geneseo, teaching humanities, history courses and Latin for the past 16 years.
Ahlquist currently lives in Henrietta with his wife, Amy, and two children, Anna, 13, and Hope, 6.
The State Teacher of the Year Program is sponsored by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), along with several other state educational organizations. It is run in conjunction with the National Teacher of the Year Program, sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers.
The Webster Central School District is located eight miles outside of the city of Rochester, New York. Bordered by Lake Ontario on the north and Irondequoit Bay to the west, WCSD serves a primarily residential, suburban community. WCSD is Monroe County’s second largest and fastest growing suburban school district, serving approximately 9,000 students.
