Community members are working together to help fight crime, one phone call at a time.
The Rochester Area CrimeStoppers Community Challenge celebrity phone drive netted approximately $18,000 in donations for the charitable organization that works with local law enforcement to help prevent crime.
With local police and fire chiefs, CrimeStoppers board members, political candidates, television personalities, business owners and community volunteers on hand to man the phones, the drive was a success towards helping Crimestoppers fund its $60,000 annual operating budget.
CrimeStoppers Board Chairman Paul Hawkins says the group needs about a total of $25,000 by the end of the year to stay in operation, which receives strong endorsements from local police agencies.
“CrimeStoppers is a highly effective tool for law enforcement,” said Chief Daniel Varrenti of the Brockport Police Department in a statement. “Every tip that comes in helps us get criminals off the streets. Crime Stoppers works, and we need to do everything we can to keep it operating.”
Varenti raised around $1,000 in personal pledges towards the organization, which is dependent upon community donations.
Also there to support the cause was special guest was Paul Vasconcellos, Sr., whose son Paulie Vasconcellos was killed in October 2010 outside of his home, a yet-unsolved case.
"Someone, somewhere, needs to come forward with information to solve this crime so that my family can have closure," he says.
Callers representing other local law enforcement included Greece Police Chief Todd Baxter, Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn;, Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard;, Brighton Police Chief Mark Henderson, Fairport Police Chief Maureen Chisholm, Brockport Police Chief Daniel Varrenti, and Rochester Fire Department Executive Chief Sam Mitrano.
The phone drive was held on Nov. 3 at the Public Safety Training Facility.
CrimeStoppers offers a Tip Hot Line, Felony Fugitive Flyer, SAFETIP Texting Program, and a Reward Fund, paying cash for reported anonymous tips that lead to arrests.
Donations, which are tax-deductible, can still be made via the CrimeStoppers website or by mail to CrimeStoppers, P.O. Box 40452, Rochester, New York 14604.
