Cheyenne Zaremba, a 13 year old from Hamlin, is one of three finalists in the Afterschool Awards competition in the Music and Arts category.

Sponsored by JCPenny, Izod and NOW Music, the Afterschool Awards is a nationwide contest spotlighting and rewarding outstanding afterschool achievements for elementary, middle school and junior high school students.

Cheyenne studies the Japanese animation art of Manga, which has become extremely popular in the last 20 years. She has created her own characters and styles, and her creations are cute, talented and whimsical— all attributes of good Manga.

You can help Cheyenne bring home the $2,500 prize by voting for her once a day at www.afterschoolawards.com. Voting ends August 15, and every voter gets a chance to win a $100 JCPenny gift card.

How did you get into manga?
About 2 years ago I was at the library and I saw this really cute book called "Miki Falls" and it was just the most adorable thing ever so I picked it up and read it and I absolutely loved it.
Then I saw the author, Mark Crilley, at the Teen Book Festival at Nazareth College in 2011 and I actually saw him draw there. At that point I was like I have to be able to draw like that and I started stylizing my drawing, but I have always, ALWAYS drawn.

What's your favorite thing about reading manga?
The expressions on people's faces. Pretty much looks in general, because you can give manga characters all sorts of hairstyles and weird outfits and that's normal for manga, which I think is cool.

What is it you like most about drawing manga?
I think it would have to be the interpretation of emotion. You can draw anything anyway you want it and you have the craziest faces and hand motions and it's still considered manga. You can express yourself however you want and nobody will say it's not right.
