1. What happened
Hunter Thomas Resch, a 7-year-old Cub Scout who attended Paddy Hill Elementary, was tragically killed by his father on Feb. 12, 2010. The murder-suicide rocked the Greece community and inspired the creation of the Hunter Resch Foundation, an organization dedicated to easing the burdens of families who find themselves in need due to domestic violence or tragedy involving a child.
The foundation works with organizations like Alternatives for Battered Women and Paddy Hill to find families in need and helps them however it can, offering gift cards for groceries or gas or helping with bills.
2. The race
The first annual Hunter Resch 5k race/walk will be held in Hunter's memory on the morning of Saturday, July 21 in Barnard Park. Registration costs $20 and begins at 8 a.m. All registered runners (not walkers) will be given an electronic chip timing device. The top male and female finishers and the top three finishers 12 and under will be awarded medals. All proceeds go to the Hunter Resch Foundation.
3 The carnival
Following the race, the third annual Hunter Resch Carnival will begin at noon at Barnard Park. The carnival will feature games for kids, a dunking tank with Greece Police Chief Todd Baxter, Abbott's ice cream, and more. There will be a K-9 demonstration with Hunter, a police dog named after Resch who, with his handler, will also participate in the race.
Parents and children who attend the carnival can take part in a child ID program in which police will fingerprint and photograph the child, then give the parents a disc with the data as a precaution against future missing children incidents.
All proceeds from the carnival go toward the foundation.
Why you should go
"It keeps Hunter's memory alive. You're supporting a great cause in the Hunter Resch Foundation. They support families in times of need in and even outside Greece."
