The Rochester Business Alliance honored two local employers as winners and 12 others as runners-up in the Eat Well, Live Well Challenge’s community-wide competition.

Participants in the spring Eat Well, Live Well Challenge 2012 were offered the opportunity to participate in a head-to-head competition with other employer’s teams.

Of the 85 employers signed up for the Challenge, 54 opted to take part in the competition. Participating organizations vied for the top spot in three categories–average steps walked, average cups of fruits and vegetables consumed and most creative plan to engage employees in the program.

Entrants were narrowed to five finalists in each category, and finalists and winners were announced at a recognition breakfast today, sponsored by the Rochester Business Alliance and Wegmans Food Markets, creators of the eight-week challenge.

Taking first place in both average steps walked and cups of fruits and vegetables consumed was Sage Rutty and Co. The financial services firm’s participants walked a daily average 13,427 steps, and consumed an average of 5.6 cups of fruits and vegetables each day.

In the steps category, Sage Rutty edged out UTC RETAIL, The Society for the Protection and Care of Children (SPCC), Fairport Savings Bank and Pearce Memorial Church. In the cups category, runners up were Pittsford Federal Credit Union, Manning and Napier, Vnomics Corp. and Bloomfield Central School District.

The five finalists in the most creative program were Harris Interactive, Monroe County, Reliant Community Federal Credit Union, Sage Rutty and Vnomics Corp. The top award was given to Reliant for a program that used unique communications and distribution of healthy food to keep participants motivated.

All the finalists received a framed certificate and the winners in three categories received apple-shaped trophies.

A total of 85 companies participated in the spring challenge.

The next Eat Well, Live Well Challenge is set for the fall. For more information on how an organization can become involved, contact Colleen DiMartino at Colleen.DiMartino@RBAlliance.
